Space makes everything cooler, right? No offense to terrestrial enthusiasts, but it's unlikely that a straight-up simulation of everyday engineering would have this kind of pull. By contrast, Space Engineers has a definite hook even in its current Steam Early Access state, which has convinced half a million PC players to pay for pre-release play. While it does feel a whole lot like a celestial take on the sandbox charm of Minecraft, Space Engineers generates its own unique brand of fun, whether you're more interested in constructing things or blasting them to bits.
While spawning into a world in Minecraft often reveals mountains and caverns to draw your attention, spinning up a new universe in Space Engineers might drop you into the middle of near-nothingness: just a person in a spacesuit with a jetpack, floating amidst the far-off stars. For most players, it's probably best to start with one of the pre-defined scenarios, which can dump you into a world with a few ships and a platform—something familiar amidst the dead of space, and a home base to start building your own fun around.
