“The Heap” really did feel like two distinct entries. Creator Noah Hawley took his series in a surprising direction tonight when midway through, he jumped ahead a year. The time shift felt almost jarring, initially. In thinking about it, though, the jump is necessary for this story to fully pay off.
We need to see Lester cemented into his new identity to give Malvo’s threat of shattering it more weight. Molly, in her happy and comfortable marriage, has far more to lose now than she did previously. While poor Agents Pepper and Budge are nearly through their year of filing purgatory. It’s the ideal moment for the Piper to come calling and expect payment. What might that payment be, though?
