One of the scariest things about the best horror films are their lack of explanation. Why is Michael Meyers out to kill babysitters? Why does Pazuzu choose Regan? Why does Rosemary get stuck with the spawn of Satan? The randomness of it all is part of what makes the terror so penetrating.
And yet, horror movies often become franchises which then require a sprawling mythology. Inevitably some of the best horror movies wind up with prequels that introduce previously unknown factors in the mythology. Sometimes it’s a surprisingly chilling addition… and sometimes it’s utterly pointless.
One thing’s for sure: we’ll watch the hell out of them either way. With this week seeing the release of The Conjuring prequel Annabelle, we take a look at 13 horror prequels Hollywood's given us.
