Future Shock! The Story of 2000AD Review IGN All

Future Shock is a long overdue account of ‘greatest comic in the galaxy’ 2000AD, the title that gave birth to the likes of Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Halo Jones and Rogue Trooper while also giving breaks to Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Mark Millar and many, many more.


But it’s no rose-tinted history of the title, the film a warts-and-all account of the trials, problems and conflicts that went on behind-the-scenes of this most British of institutions.


Paul Goodwin’s documentary sets the scene by placing the 1977 launch of the comic in context. The UK was in a terrible place, with mass unemployment and widespread strikes bringing the nation to its knees.


That civil unrest spawned the punk movement and also inspired Pat Mills – a comic scribe tired of ‘writing rubbish’ – to launch 2000AD, a book that would stick two fingers up to the industry while at the same time tackling the social and political issues of the time.
