This weekend in Oakland, C.A., the Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment will spend a day trying to resurrect Lucasfilm's 1989 game Habitat, which the museum is calling the "first massively multiplayer online game."
MADE is trying to relaunch the Habitat server on original Stratus Technologies hardware, and also allow users to connect to it for free using a Commodore 64 emulator. If the hackathon on Sunday, Sept. 28 is successful, MADE will keep Habitat online while trying to develop modern code and server hardware for it.
Fujitsu, the company that owns the rights to Habitat, and KIXEYE, a developer specializing in mobile and online strategy games, will assist in the effort as well.
