The Knick: "Get the Rope" Review IGN All

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...


This week's big, exciting single-event episode, "Get the Rope," ended with two love connections as the hospital staff rallied together to save their black patients from an angry mob - which in turn lit a spark between Edwards and Cordelia along with Thackery and Nurse Elkins.


It was an episode born out of staggering, appalling racism, sure. But also, as an episode, it was - as strange as it is to use the word given the circumstances - fun. No, watching bigoted citizens and cops beat on innocent black civilians wasn't enjoyable, but the crisis allowed for some unexpected heroism and surprising bravery. While it's true that Thackery seemed like he'd already turned a huge corner with Edwards (their deal last week didn't exactly imply "comradery") by the time the episode opened, it was still a surprise to see Thack remain so altruistic throughout the ordeal. And him offering up him own personal stash of opiate for a patient down at the negro clinic floored me.
