The Strain: "Last Rites" Review IGN All

For most of this first season The Strain has been very stingy in doling out information, whether it’s in regards to plot or character. A slower, deliberate pace can be a good thing for a series, giving the writers time to explore the people in the show and subtly set up plot points that can pay off down the road. But in the case of The Strain, its slow pace has more often played like just that: a slow pace. A great deal of time was spent with the four plane survivors, detailing their painful process of turning after being infected. It was interesting to see the show’s take on vampire metamorphosis, but all that time meant that other characters had to be occasionally sidelined, sometimes for weeks at a time. When the focus turned to the folks that make up the current pawn shop team, it was usually for the bulk of an episode. “Last Rites” does a complete 180 on all that, feeling like the show realized it spent most of the semester daydreaming and now has to cram for next week’s final.
