Daniel Radcliffe returns to movie theaters this weekend in Horns, in a movie that is certainly unlike any other you’ll find at the multiplex. In this adaptation of the novel by Joe Hill, Radcliffe stars as Ignatius "Ig" Perrish, a young man wrongly accused of murdering his girlfriend, Merrin (Juno Temple). Overwhelmed by his feelings of loss and anger, Ig wakes up one day and, without any explanation, he’s grown horns – and with them, gained powerful abilities that include seeing people’s transgressions and sins and even influencing their actions. Soon, Ig is looking and acting more and more like the devil himself, while also finding out the true secrets behind Merrin's death.
I spoke to Radcliffe about the unusual nature of the film -- directed by Alexandre Aja -- and its many tonal shifts, which include moments of black comedy, straightforward horror and naturalistic drama. We also discussed sharing screen time with another actor (Mitchell Kummen) playing Ig as a child in flashbacks, working with prosthetics and more… including Radcliffe walking the floor at San Diego Comic-Con this past summer incognito, thanks to a Spider-Man costume.
