Parallels: Showcasing Australia’s Indie Scene IGN All

This month, Australia’s long-running Freeplay Independent Games Festival hosted Parallels, a showcase of independent developers verbally annotating live playthroughs of their games.


The sold-out event was held at Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne’s Federation Square, and there probably isn’t a more perfect place to bring together what Freeplay describes as “bedroom coders, to artists exploring the possibilities of games, to game culture’s punk rockers and agitators.”


The games displayed in this showcase – born from the very roots of indie game development, populated by hobbyists and students – were marked by uncertainty, a sense that the demoed games were ephemeral. While a few were designed to be quick, bite-sized experiences, some developers admitted that despite having bigger goals, their games might not ever move beyond the prototype stage. One mentioned forlornly, upon wrapping up his presentation, that he had “no idea” how he was going to fund further development of his ambitious prototype.
