Even though Chas tagged along here in "Rage of Caliban" (a Halloween episode just in time for Thanksgiving), he's a dry enough character (for now) that I sort of considered this chapter a solo-John episode. And yes, the show is getting progressively weaker when it comes to coming up with excuses for one of the team members being absent.
A few weeks back it was Chas repairing the taxi cab and this time it was Zed - who was in art class. And considering how last week's spiritual mess needed the full trio and Corrigan and Papa Midnite, you'd think there'd be a more "all hands on deck mentality" going on as it pertains to the Rising Darkness making every troublesome event even more challenging.
