Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow
Crowley's existence is about to get much more interesting because mommy's back. Rowena, played by Ruth Connell, first appeared in "Soul Survivor." She's shown herself to be a powerful witch and a formidable enemy, and she's Crowley's mother. His face when he recognized her and the way they cut that shot? Priceless. I'm already looking forward to seeing Mark Sheppard explore another side of Crowley. The addition of Rowena brings in a lot of possibilities, questions to explore, and development for the King of Hell.
She came into the story in a really organic way, too. A few separate plots merged together in "Girls, Girls, Girls," and it felt seamless. Sam and Dean didn't even intend to be working a case; they fell into it because of Dean's hook-up app (oh come on, he wouldn't go for any other kind of dating website). From there, the story unfolded without feeling forced and it was nice to see a story that reached beyond the brothers. It was time for a change of pace.
