I’ve never cared for the Borderlands universe. I enjoyed Borderlands as an action game, appreciated Borderlands 2’s smarter, more human story, but subsequently passed on The Pre-Sequel when I was officially over it. I came into Tales From the Borderlands a bored skeptic, and came out the other side excited to discover more from a world I had little affinity for.
Whether or not you know the difference between Hyperion and Atlas, Tales From the Borderlands is an outstanding story that exists on its own terms. Its plot, characters, music, and themes would fit comfortably into the world of Cowboy Bebop or Firefly just as well as Gearbox’s sci-fi shooter universe. Tales accomplishes this by focusing on people and places, and rejecting nearly everything that makes Borderlands games great.
