Follow-up warning: For the purposes of this review, we’ve forgotten about a little old show called Broadchurch in order to give Gracepoint our full attention.
Remember two weeks ago when the last new episode of Gracepoint aired and we were all infuriated that Carver’s medical condition stopped him and Ellie from nabbing the suspect? All of those feelings bubbled back up during the ninth installment’s opening moments, as we picked up with Carver in the hospital, in need of surgery, and a disapproving Ellie standing over him.
The fact that the guy was able to check himself out of the hospital, let alone carry on trying to solve the Danny Solano murder case was beyond ridiculous. For a fleeting moment it looked as though Ellie was going to be the one to finally head up the unit, but of course we were given a timeline instead when Carver was simply asked to hand in his gun with the threat of being fired the next morning. Annoying or not, it did serve to add that last little burst of pressure we needed for the detectives to give their all in solving the case – and in bringing us some closure heading into next week’s finale.
