Warning: full episode spoilers follow.
This new Nightfall episode was pretty much more of the same. Our heroes continued their trek across the hellish landscape that was once Halo Installation 04, facing an impending sunrise, a relentless alien enemy, dwindling oxygen, and the knowledge that most of them won't be able to make it home. At this point it's clear that the more intriguing elements of Nightfall's plot - the mysterious, human-killing element, Aiken's past as a Spartan, etc. - are never going to receive the focus they deserved. But at least the drama intensified this week as the fight for survival grew more heated.
The lack of drama has always been Nightfall's crippling flaw. Most of the characters are so bland and one-dimensional that the show gives you no reason to care about them or their plight. That flaw is finally addressed this week as we begin seeing the ONI soldiers at their lowest point. Mind you, the twists and betrayals in this episode would have been far more meaningful if we had been allowed to invest more in the soldiers and their relationships before now, but at this point I'll take what I can get.
