Magicka 2 Might Be the Gauntlet We Need IGN All

When I reviewed the resurrection of Gauntlet three months ago, I was convinced of two things. One: I'm definitely still in the mood for a multiplayer arcade dungeon crawler. Two: Gauntlet wasn't it. As much as the co-op combat featuring distinct warriors and plentiful rapport was pleasing my first time through, there was precious little content that drew me back to the dungeons. I'm a little more confident that something like Magicka 2 will cast a wider spell to capture my attention.


If you're one of the millions of PC gamers who have picked up the original Magicka in the nearly four years it's been around, you know that there's already a great base for co-op adventuring. What Magicka parties lack in individuality (every member has the same tools at their disposal) they more than make up for with a deep spell-making system. With eight spell types, ranging from lightning and fire to dark magic and shields, each can be deployed as a beam, in an area of effect, or to oneself. Where things get crazy is when spells mix; elements like earth and fire can combine to make a molten rock or tossing lightning at a doused enemy will cause additional damage. As in the previous game, you can stack up to five spells in a single casting, making for some unique combos that can slow down time and deal even further damage. Combine all of that with the fact that there can be up to three partners to mix elements with (and hit with friendly fire), and the depth of the combat becomes truly stunning.
