This Fall saw DC Comics release several new comics in their Batman line, all of which fly in the face of the established Jim Lee-influenced New 52 style. Gotham Academy uses a cartoonish look to tell the story of teenage Gothamites going to a mysterious prep school. Gotham by Midnight embraces Ben Templesmith’s surreal style to evoke a supernatural horror vibe. Arkham Manor features characters with exaggerated features. And Batgirl’s new creative team has swapped Gotham’s darkness for something more akin to a fine art college full of trendy hipsters. The rest of DC’s line has maintained the standard style, so that begs the question, how come Batman can get away with doing his own thing?
