American Horror Story: Freak Show Season Review IGN All

Warning: Full spoilers for the AHS: Freak Show season follow...


Being that we're now four seasons deep into the American Horror Story game, I feel like it's time to look back at the triumphs and forfeits of the series. For me, the show has gotten less exciting and vibrant with each subsequent year - with Murder House being my favorite season, followed by Asylum, and then Freak Show and Coven cage-fighting it out for third place. I have to say - despite not enjoying the undisciplined, overlong episodes or the Glee-style out-of place/out-of-time contemporary(ish) song numbers - I'm giving the slight edge to Freak Show.


Just by a hair's breadth, mind you. I felt like the villains this season were pretty inspired and formidable. The one-two-three punch of Twisty, Dandy, and Stanley helped give the Freak Show season a cruel streak that Coven seemed to lack (Kathy Bates' Delphine LaLaurie was mostly played for laughs and the witch hunters were wound up being a non-issue). Where Freak Show faltered the most (though there's still plenty more to gripe about) is that, despite having a large ensemble, it still didn't have enough story to fill 13 episodes. It never should have extended into 2015. 10 episodes would have been great. Eight would have been even better.
