Broadband Benchmark Speed Could Be Raised IGN All

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) may raise the speeds that qualify as broadband internet.


The proposed increase comes as part of the Congress-mandated Annual Broadband Progress Report. According to Ars Technica, the FCC "finds that broadband is not being deployed to all Americans in a reasonable and timely fashion, especially in rural areas, on Tribal lands, and in US Territories."


Raising the standard of broadband to the suggested 25Mbps download/3Mbps upload speeds would be quite a jump from last month's ruling, which stated all internet service providers receiving Connect America funds must offer speeds of at least 10Mbps down and 1Mbps up.
