The Writers Guild of America announced their nominations today for 2014's best feature film screenwriting, with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy a surprise nominee in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay.
Guardians' competitors in the Best Adapted Screenplay category include American Sniper, Gone Girl, The Imitation Game, and Wild.
Guardians writer-director James Gunn posted the following response to his WGA nomination on his Facebook page:
"So today I woke up to discover I was nominated, along with Nicole Perlman, for a Writer's Guild Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Guardians of the Galaxy. I'm honored and surprised by this, especially because we were the only film, of all ten films nominated for writing awards, that did not send a screener to Guild members, and did not spend money on any kind of push.
