Let’s just get right out with it: Smite on Xbox One proves that a hardcore MOBA can work well on consoles.
It’s okay to be skeptical. I was too. After all, MOBAs sit right alongside MMOs and RTSs in the “Best Played on PC” pantheon. Smite sidesteps this problem by setting itself apart from MOBAs like League of Legends and Dota 2, both in perception and reality, while staying true to what makes the genre so satisfying.
Smite’s biggest strength is that it looks and feels like a third-person action game. It’s not a top-down game with cursors, camera panning, and cramped item menus. This is a familiar, fast MOBA that plays well without a keyboard and mouse. At just a glance, it already looks like you could sit down, spend a few hours with it, and have a great time. MOBAs are usually about as welcoming as a moated castle lined with archers.
