Warning: full episode spoilers follow.
It's been nearly a month since the last new episode of The Big Bang Theory. The show needed a winner to start building momentum in 2015. Initially, "The Space probe Disintegration" didn't seem like it was going to manage that feat. The early portions of the episode were fairly dry and even a little troubling in how they treated the male/female dynamic on the show. But things steadily picked up over the course of this half hour. In the end, we got some genuine character moments and growth along with a solid dose of humor.
First things first. I found myself a little bothered by the opening argument between Leonard/Sheldon and Penny/Amy as the two factions argued over what to do on their double date. I wish this show didn't strive so much to keep up the fiction that only boys enjoy geeky pursuits like board games, sci-fi movies, comics, video games, etc. It degenerates everything into a war of boys vs. girls, and the latter group is inevitably painted as the more mature and respectable bunch. The episode started veering into that territory where it spends more energy making fun of the boys and their nerdy interests than celebrating them. It didn't help that the quartet wound up choosing that most stereotypical of female pursuits - shopping for clothes while the menfolk sit bored and holding purses.
