Taken 3 ended the long reign of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies at the domestic box office this weekend.
The Liam Neeson threequel performed beyond expectations with an estimated $40.4 million opening. That's the second-highest January debut ever behind Ride Along and just ahead of Cloverfield, according to Deadline.
This weekend also saw Selma and Inherent Vice expand into wider release. Selma, now on 2,179 screens, shot up to second place with an estimated $11.2 million. Inherent Vice expanded to 645 screens with $2.9 million ford 11th place.
