Wi-Fi Controlled Robots Could Soon Be Managing the ISS IGN All

Thanks to a new Wi-Fi guidance system, robots on the International Space Station (ISS) may soon be able to work without direct control.


New Scientist reports the robots in question, known as SPHERES, have been on the ISS since 2006, where they've been working in small, two-meter-wide spaces and operate using ultrasound beacons. This update would allow the robots to move throughout the station and work on other basic tasks, freeing up astronauts for more important work.


So far, a team based at a NASA research center in California has been able to map and locate the SPHERES with an accuracy of 1.59 meters using Wi-Fi signals.
