Lorne Lanning, creator of the Oddworld series, says the decision to move the Oddworld series from the PlayStation to the Xbox was a matter of survival.
In a panel discussion at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas called “A Conversation with Shu Yoshida”, Lanning was asked about the reasons behind the move – a potentially touchy subject considering the presence of the president of Sony Worldwide Studios.
Lanning didn't pull any punches, answering that the decision was forced because it was becoming more unpredictable to plan and develop a game on the PlayStation 2, as well as more expensive. "We were trying to survive,” he said. “It was a way to actually land and survive."
There's some interesting timing behind the move – last year's Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty was the first time a game in the franchise had made its debut on a PlayStation platform (PS4) since the series moved to the original Xbox with Munch's Oddysee in 2001.
