Green Lantern #40 Review IGN All

When Robert Venditti first took over Green Lantern, he transformed the role of Hal Jordan in a fairly unexpected way by making him leader of the Corps. Considering that such a thing usually took a whole team of immortal beings to do, this was definitely going to be quite the challenge for Hal. The character has grown a great deal as a result of his trials and troubles as Corps Leader, but now Venditti is ready to challenge him a new way once again. The results are brutal and painful to watch, but it’s damn effective storytelling.


Though it’s not clear yet what the future holds, Venditti uses his newest issue to show us exactly what’s landed him in this new situation. This main focus behind this issue is placed squarely on Hal and Kilowog. Hal has a very specific plan, and unfortunately it involves everyone’s favorite Bolovaxian. This is where is all of the brutality comes out of, but it’s founded, paradoxically, in a place of friendship. Venditti smartly plays on our emotions by giving this story a heartfelt foundation by using one of the oldest Lantern friendships in all of DCU continuity. This issue was simultaneously exciting, hard to read, and intriguing as every page leads Hal towards an uncertain future.
