Note: Full spoilers for the episode below.
"The Hunt" took a step back from the usual plots and dedicated some time to establishing relationships with an episode. The parallel here was the challenging and strengthening of the main relationships in Boyd and Raylan's life, but with Boyd facing a more harrowing story while Raylan's was more softening.
Boyd and Ava were the more interesting pair. Despite the episode spending most of its time in muddled, run-through relationships, Boyd and Ava in the woods turned pretty intense. I've been pretty vocal about this relationship so far this season, but if this is going to be the crux of the final season, so be it.
After some fireworks--and some light hinting that maybe Boyd thought Ava was on the run because she didn't want to get married (nicely done, whoever's idea that was)--the episode took a very dramatic turn when Boyd began threatening her. Ava, to her credit, stuck some of it out and there were some ... abusive scenes. When rubber hit the road, Ava finally confessed she was a CI and now the parameters have changed. Regardless, of whatever happened, the Ava-Boyd scenes were pretty intense and almost claustrophobic. It was done well.
