Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
Tonight's Once Upon a Time didn't hold back from giving us answers. One of the keys to making a reveal effective is holding it back just long enough to increase anticipation but not so long that it frustrates the audience. They hit the sweet spot with all the secrets they uncovered tonight.
Snow and Charming made such a big deal about what they did to Maleficent and her child that I was sure they exaggerated. But no, what happened was awful and they shouldn't be excused because they thought they were harming a dragon instead of a human. Kristin Bauer van Straten made Maleficent's heartache hit hard; you sympathized with her and felt anger at Snow and Charming on her behalf. The combination of the backstory and Bauer van Straten's performance has added layers of humanity to the villain, and you can see how these events inform who Maleficent is today. This take on the character feels natural too and not like the "insert tragic backstory" here storytelling that occasionally happens. I'm pleased she learned her daughter survived even if Emma mentioning Lily earlier in the episode took the punch away from the reveal.
