Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
Once Upon a Time hasn't lost a beat since its midseason finale. "Darkness on the Edge of Town" reset the board with new players and secrets but also made sure to show us the quest to find the author of the storybook is still on. And before the excitement started, we got some lovely scenes of people in Storybrooke enjoying normal life. It's been six weeks since Anna and Elsa left and since Belle expelled Rumplestiltskin. Belle and Hook exchanged a fantastic scene talking about being fooled by Rumple and that moment is just one example of the spot-on dialogue and character interactions throughout the episode.
Regina and Emma were particularly awesome. I've said it before, but I admire the way their friendship has developed and taken steps backward and then forward again over the course of the show. It's clear Lana Parrilla and Jennifer Morrison have become more comfortable with each other, and they're natural as can be whether they're joking about food or fighting Chernabog. It doesn't hurt that Parrilla gets the majority of the funny lines – the jokes make the conversations between Emma and Regina more entertaining and memorable.
