Jonathan Hickman's Avengers comics are rapidly approaching the big endgame that is Secret Wars. Whereas the previous issue of Avengers focused mainly on the Ultimate Universe and that Reed Richards' role in the Incursions, issue #42 takes a wider view of matters. This chapter touches on many character and plot points, but the crux of the conflict boils down to two things. On one hand, the Illuminati are desperately trying to build an ark of sorts to survive the impending collapse of the multiverse. On the other, Gladiator leads a massive fleet tasked with destroying the Earth and hopefully saving the rest of existence. Both of these conflicts contribute to another epic chapter in Hickman's saga.
