After exposing the oasis of middle age benchmarks such as marriage and measures of success with films like The Squid and The Whale, Margot at the Wedding, and Greenberg, director Noah Baumbach has reset his career by pressing the “play” button. He’s made two femme new-wave films—on the sly—with Greta Gerwig (2013’s Frances Ha and this year’s upcoming Mistress America). Both of those films were punctuated with surprise! exclamation-mark film festival announcements. They were surprises because Baumbach and Gerwig skipped the modern press release announcement of casting, and “now filming” memos for those flicks—and outside of the crew and small pockets of in-the-know folks, no one knew that those films existed.
