Better Call Saul: 'Marco' Review IGN All

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follows...


As the volume on Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water amped up, and Jimmy drove off into his Saul Goodman…Well, I don’t think we can reasonably call it a happily ever after sunset, but chosen fate, I found myself wrestling with mixed feelings. On the one hand, “Marco” brought us full circle to a budding version of the Saul that Breaking Bad fans knew and loved. I would have preferred that this season leave us with some ambiguity, though.


The episode may have packed greater emotional punch, and left us with a more dynamic sense of tension, if it had concluded on that beautiful shot of Jimmy arrested in motion as he headed into the courthouse; hand on Marco’s ring and torn between two paths. Yes, we know where Jimmy/Saul is ultimately headed. There was more to mine from the rich character exploration that this series introduced, though. We know why Jimmy was battling to do the right thing, and we know that eventually, as Saul, he will abandon the effort – so we didn’t need him to overtly say that to Mike in that final scene. “I know why I didn’t…and I’ll never do it again.”
