Salem: Season 2 Premiere Review IGN All

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...


One of the best things Salem had going for it back in Season 1 was Stephen Lang's Increase Mather, who allowed the audience to be able to fully root for the witches. Not that there was any love lost between the viewer and puritanical Salem itself, but once Increase became everyone's enemy the show picked up steam.


Well, the show learned from that dynamic, I think. Because the best Mary Sibley is a Mary Sibley against the ropes. Mary got a big win at the end of Season 1, but she's still poised and positioned to fend off opposition from every conceivable side - adversaries both human and witch. And even though "Cry Havoc" opened with a scene depicting denizens of Salem's "Knocker's Hollow" district rotting away from the plague, you still want her to succeed. She's worked so hard for this. Schemed some ingenious schemes. And the way the show's set up, you feel nervous whenever it seems like her plans are about to come undone.
