I've mentioned before that the Bruce Wayne of Zero Year is a refreshing change of pace from the dark and brooding persona that's come to dominate the contemporary imagining of Batman. This Bruce curses, often gleefully; he takes the kind of joy in his work that we don't often see in the Dark Knight -- not anymore, at least. Every now and then, a victorious smirk even finds its way onto his face. All of that is present in this issue, but writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo pull back the curtain to show us the weight of the past that is crushing Bruce. Eventually, that pressure of his guilt -- harvested over a lifetime of decisions, both innocuous and disastrous -- is what turns him into the Batman we've come to know.
