Secret Avengers #1 is a great comic book. It's exactly what an Avengers book should be, fast, fun and overflowing with character. It's moves at a lightning fast pace, giving the tidbits you need as the scenes and characters jump in and out. This comic never takes itself too seriously, it's just big, ridiculous set pieces that flash before your eyes. It's good guys. Really, really good.
Ales Kot is certainly making a name for himself in the superhero game. This is probably his best work in the mainstream comic world, to date. He effortlessly juggles multiple characters and builds a fsat, familiar storyline in a matter of pages. Sure, we've seen a lot of the “spy in the ranks of S.H.E.I.L.D.” lately, but Kot doesn't linger on the specifics too long. He just gets to the good stuff and that's what makes this comic work. You are never bored, never stuck on a scene for too long. It feels fresh and new, which is exactly what you'd want from a new number one issue.
