Arrow: Series Premiere Review IGN All

Advance Review: As someone who feels that the first act of Richard Donner's Superman movie is the greatest superhero movie ever, I wanted desperately to love Smallville. But the show's campier qualities and convoluted, meandering mythology managed to drive me away in the end. But in many ways, Green Arrow was the breakout character of later seasons and the one best positioned for a spinoff series. That's what The CW delivers -- in a way -- with Arrow, and the pilot episode suggests the show will be more well-rounded and engaging than Smallville tended to be.


Arrow isn't actually connected to Smallville or that show's specific version of Green Arrow, but instead offers a new and somewhat darker take on Oliver Queen and his alter ego. If Smallville looked to Superman: The Movie for its foundation, Arrow seems more inspired by Batman Begins. It may, in fact, be the closest we ever get to a "Young Bruce Wayne" show. It presents a similar look at a young, disaffected billionaire who returns to his city after a long absence and seeks a way to punish those wealthy few who have profited on the misery of the rest.
