Uncanny Avengers #1 Review IGN All

Last year in my Building a Better Digital Comics Marketplace feature, I half-jokingly predicted a future where Marvel only published one book -- Wolverine and the Uncanny Spider-Avengers. But now that Marvel is hinging its entire relaunch on a book called Uncanny Avengers, are we one step closer to that dark future? If it were a lesser creative team I'd be worried, but the pairing of Rick Remender and John Cassaday practically guarantees success. And though Uncanny Avengers #1 suffers from flaws common to most #1 issues, it is a successful start for for the new series.


It's fitting that this series is the first Marvel NOW! book to see print, as it picks up shortly after the events of Avengers vs. X-Men #12. Remender provides a glimpse of Charles Xavier's funeral and the general turmoil among the X-Men as they face an uncertain future. I do hope other post-AvX books will tackle the funeral from different perspectives, however, as it doesn't necessarily receive the space it deserves here. But to be fair, too much attention on the funeral would have detracted from Remender's other conflicts. Much of his focus rests on developing the status quo of characters like Havok, Rogue, and Scarlet Witch and setting the stage for their respective roles on the team.
