Ann Nocenti began her run on Catwoman with last month's #0 issue. Among that issue's many problems were a pointlessly fractured narrative and an inexplicable attempt to marry nearly every version of Selina Kyle's origins into one bloated whole. Issue #13 at least isn't saddled with all that origin nonsense, but Nocenti once again burdens the book with a jumbled and generally unsatisfying script.
As with Batgirl #13 last week, the actual ties to the Death of the Family event are fairly minimal at the moment. Readers who are buying the issue solely because of its tie-in status would be better off saving their money. A mysterious figure who is presumably Joker occasionally pops up to torment Selina with images of her past, but the general focus is on a new mission that quickly goes awry. Frankly, this issue would have functioned better without any sort of connection to Death of the Family. The main conflict is never developed properly because the sporadic Joker scenes keep breaking the flow of the story. In particular, the final pages lack the necessary flow to convey the sense of drama Nocenti is trying to achieve.
