Dexter: "Helter Skelter" Review IGN All

"Holy fillet of f***!"


I'll say this: I certainly did not expect Isaak's arc to end this way, but I liked it. It was a change-up from the traditional "wrapped in plastic" finish that has now become commonplace and I'm at the point where I welcome most tweaks to the original formula. Admittedly, I did go through a bit of kicking and screaming right at the outset though, when Isaak showed up on Dexter's doorstep so soon after last week's fantastic scene between the two of them. A scene that I felt shouldn't be tampered with; left as-is, with no more additional correspondence needed.


And yes, some of this detour-ish episode did trample on last week's bonding moment a bit. But what "Helter Skelter" wound up doing overall was transforming Isaak from a "Big Bad" into a sacrificial character; along the lines of Season 6's Brother Sam and Season 3's Camilla. Meaning, those who must perish so Dexter can (hopefully) learn a new social skill. And while Isaak might not have taught Dexter the importance of love, or how to love, his death definitely got Dexter to open up about his feelings and get past the terse "likewise" coldness that he's used to relying on.
