At first glance, Skylanders Battlegrounds appears to have all the elements needed for yet another smash-hit entry in the ever-growing Skylanders toy and game empire. All the characters are included (including the new Giants), there’s a smart touch-powered battle system, great graphics and excellent sound. But once more time is spent with the $7 download, several big drawbacks become apparent.
While the console Skylanders titles work well for both adults and youngsters, Battlegrounds’ undemanding, easy combat will quickly bore anyone with previous video game experience. Gamers begin each mission on a hexagonal level map, navigating to each objective with simple touch controls. Each time you move your two-man team of Skylanders the roving enemies are also given an opportunity to move around the map.
