New Avengers #1 Review IGN All

Whereas Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers title started with the epic scope and big team dynamics we expected, New Avengers immediately establishes a more personal tone by focusing exclusively on Black Panther. You will remember him as the one man who said "no" to being part of the self-appointed Illuminati who tasked themselves with running the world in secret. Something quite crazy happens in this first issue that has him join the group, and while I’m still not sure exactly what went down, I’m already looking forward to the drama between the big thinkers, the summoner, and the man who Black Panther calls “the devil himself.”


Right off the bat, it’s obvious the team has one glaring problem: there are no women. This strikes me as odd given how Marvel seems to be promoting females in lead roles in other comics such as Red She-Hulk, Journey into Mystery, and Fearless Defenders. Even Hickman’s main Avengers title has a healthy number of ladies, so it seems strange for him to make the Illuminati a Boys Club. This issue’s villain is a woman, but suffice to say that making a pale female in a leather tube top your baddie doesn’t help the problem.
