Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
Well, look, I’m in! “The Originals” was, of course, a backdoor pilot episode, focused on the characters and world of a potential Vampire Diaries spinoff series for this fall. And on that score, it was a solid success, doing a great job of establishing a new dynamic, using several pre-existing characters – and a few new ones.
I get the concern of having a Vampire Diaries episode that completely left out Stefan, Damon and Elena, but it did seem a bit odd to just have them there a the beginning and end, and the hour would have been just fine with them not included at all – though at least that ending scene was a pretty cool one, as the Salvatore brothers begin one hell of a tough love program to get “their” Elena back.
