Young Avengers #4 Review IGN All

Young Avengers #4, penned by Kieron Gillen with art by Jamie McKelvie, heralds the much awaited return of Kate Bishop and her new Kree suitor Noh-Varr and it’s every bit as glorious as it should be. Last month’s issue ended with our young heroes in a bit of a pickle, bound and helpless as the legion of parent clones from hell closed in.


Gillen succeeds where so many writers fail in getting inside the minds of his teenaged characters. As Noh-Varr flips and soars through the air, guns in hand, his inner monologue makes him come alive within the span of just a few pages. For a character that’s been absent for several issues and had only a brief appearance thus far, it’s doubly impressive that his voice rings so true. He’s more than just a super-powered being ripping into a slew of other super-powered beings. He’s a boy, by turns cocky and insecure, determined to impress the girl he likes. And that narrative feat gets to the heart of what Young Avengers is all about. They’re a team of heroes, as noble and brave as any other, but before anything else, they’re teenagers. Gillen’s writing is funny, poignant, honest and, most importantly, flavored with a lovely Terminator reference.
