When “The Hellfire Saga” officially kicked off in Wolverine and the X-Men #31 earlier this month, the story's primary flaw was the over-emphasis on Jason Aaron's usual brand of surreal, black humor. For the first chapter of what is supposed to be a watershed moment in the series' lifespan, it didn't actually feel that dramatic or dangerous. The debut of the Hellfire Academy and its teachers read more like an extremely in-depth practical joke being played on Wolverine than a dire new threat to the X-Men as a whole.
