IGN's Console Launch Memories: The First Purchase IGN PS3

With the launch of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 creeping closer by the minute, we decided to take a look back at the first time we bought a console with our hard earned money. Not our first console proper; that's a story we're saving for a later date. But rather, that initial moment where we parted ways with an unfathomably large amount of cash in exchange for what we hoped would be the future of video games. Some of us ended up acquiring one of the greatest consoles of all time. Others...well...not so much. Join us in reliving our first console purchases, and share your own in the comments below.




Anyone who grew up Catholic knows that, at least back when I was a kid, you got RICH (relatively speaking) when you made your First Communion. Seriously, when you’re in Catholic family (read: lots of Aunts and Uncles) and you reach that religious milestone, everyone in that extended family sends you money. I managed to accrue enough to buy the original Nintendo Entertainment System that, up until then, I’d only been able to play at friends’ houses. Kid Icarus, The Legend of Zelda, and of course the pack-in Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cartridge kept me busy for many, many hours in the years that followed. I missed out on the 1980s cheesy greatness that was R.O.B. the Robot and the Power Glove, though.
