At the conclusion of Season 2, Falling Skies appeared to be a series on the cusp of realizing its full potential. Charleston offered a new setting and a change of pace for the show’s regular cast of characters, while the mysterious alien race that crashed down during the ending moments of the season had the potential to shake the very foundation of the series. Despite all of that potential, Season 3 was never able to improve on what came before it and ended up being a satisfactory, yet unremarkable, ten episode run.
Season 3’s biggest failing was due, in large part, to some early season character arcs that never gained moment to rise above their clichéd beginnings. Early on, it’s established that there is a mole amongst Charleston’s senior staff. We soon discover that Hal has been engaging with the enemy, under the influence of an alien bug, and suspects himself to be a mole. This culminates into a Good Hal versus Evil Hal internal struggle that ends up looking a little ridiculous and clichéd on screen. Drew Roy does his best with the heel turn for his character but the whole thing is ultimately short lived and has so little impact on the overall plot that it makes us question why they went down that path in the first place. At least we got a really effective exorcism style scene as they attempt to remove the alien parasite from Hal’s body.
