Arrow: "Broken Dolls" Review IGN All

Well, this episode certainly made a statement. As strong as this second season of Arrow has been already, "Broken Dolls" kicked things up several notches. This episode offered plenty of momentum on several fronts, a terrifically creepy villain, several memorable action scenes, and easily the coolest villain tease of any episode so far. There was very little not to love this week.


Where to begin? I suppose with this week's new villain. This episode introduced Dollmaker, a fairly minor DC villain whose most recent claim to fame was surgically removing Joker's face at the beginning of the New 52 relaunch. The writers basically cast Dollmaker as a serial killer with a very specific fetish. The take worked very well. Actor Michael Eklund gave off a very creepy vibe, which combined with the way the episode was framed and lit, made this episode feel very reminiscent of Se7en. The camera work really stood out in this episode in a way it doesn't often with the show. Some scenes that especially stood out were Lance's rooftop meeting with Ollie and the shaky-cam parkour chase between Roy and Cynthia.
