With such a sweet looking Francesco Francavilla cover, you’d never guess that Fantomex MAX is possibly the worst use of the freedom that Marvel’s MAX line allows. Fantomex seems tailor made for the MAX treatment with his womanizing ways, covert spy nature, and trippy powers that are hard to wrap your brain around. Somehow this story manages to use all of those elements and still fail to deliver the goods.
This book is trite, homophobic, and misogynistic. Don’t get me wrong, some of the best works of fiction utilize the worst part of human nature to make a compelling tale, so I’m not against it if it serves the story, but that’s just not the case here. There’s a constant attempt at edgy humor that never earns a laugh. The jokes all aim for the easy targets yet still manage to miss. And while MAX allows for graphic violence and excessive cursing, among other things, it’s all used in trivial ways that do nothing to enhance the storytelling.
