"The Secret Origin of Tony Stark" was more fun when it actually focused on the origin of Tony Stark. This storyline has lost a fair amount of steam as it's transitioned into phase 2 and Tony has been given the reins of the Godkiller armor. It turns out that the notion of a suit so powerful it nearly wiped out the Celestials is better in theory than in practice.
This arc's woes only continue in the fourth chapter. The stakes are somewhat lessened now that the Godkiller has halted its warpath. And while Kieron Gillen mines some tension out of Tony's struggle to escape the suit before it self-destructs itself straight out of existence, that conflict only lasts about half of the issue. What follows is a poorly paced, awkwardly inserted interlude as the timeframe skips ahead several months and Tony returns to Earth to reconnect with his friends and loved ones. All of this is then quickly cast aside as Tony resumes digging into his murky past again. Hopefully that means issue #17 will offer a return to what made this storyline appealing in the beginning. But regardless, there seems to be a lot of wasted space here.
