Anthologies can be tricky to review. Oftentimes, there are noticeable peaks and valleys in the quality of writing or art, but Vertigo's The Witching Hour one-shot is blissfully consistent all the way through. There are, of course, chapters that stand out above all the rest as exceptional examples of short-form storytelling, but nothing sticks out as a truly weak link. The cover (by the phenomenally talented Jenny Frisson) promises nine tales of divine horror, but what you really get are nine tales of monsters both magical and mundane. The stories selected for The Witching Hour (mostly) encapsulate the idea that sometimes, the most horrifying thing we can imagine lies within ourselves.
