Boardwalk Empire: Season 4 Review IGN All

Warning: Full spoilers for the fourth season of Boardwalk Empire follow…

While the third season of Boardwalk Empire seemed to be about the tearing down of Nucky's world (thanks in no small part to Emmy-winner Bobby Cannavale's ferocious Gyp Rosetti), the beginning of Season 4 was all about repairing it. Nucky formed an uneasy-but-satisfactory truce with Masseria and new bootlegging prospects opened up in Florida, growing the booze business like never before. But what Nucky didn't count on was everyone around him crumbling.

Most notably, and noticeably, Jimmy's story still had too much pain to contain. It was a wound that hadn't quite closed yet. And the remnants of the Darmody arc were still engaged in a tug-of-war - one that would eventually turn that world to ash. A sad fact, and one that took two years after Jimmy's death to fully deal with. Even sadder for the viewers too because even though we felt the loss of Jimmy (whether you loved him as a character of simply thought, as the show's "Number Two," he was vastly more interesting than Nucky) we still had Gillian and Harrow to cling to. Gillian wasn't always an easy woman to love, but you always understood why she did what she did, or at least why her traumatic past forever warped her sense of family and propriety.

Will Walking Dead's Midseason Finale Match the Comics? IGN All

Note: We're going into some major spoilers for The Walking Dead comic book here - specifically for the events that occurred in issue #48 (or the end of Compendium One, for those reading it that way). While it's speculation on what could happen in the TV show, be warned, this could also end up being a huge spoiler for this Sunday's Walking Dead midseason finale, if any of this does occur. Read on at your own peril! Also, for this story, comic book spoilers will be allowed in the comments as well. (But just this story!)

So, The Governor is attacking the prison in The Walking Dead midseason finale. With a tank.

Yes, the TV show took a long, strange road to get here, with the Governor's first, aborted attack on the prison and his recent storyline where he seemed to be on the path to redemption, only to reveal he was not. But now we seem to have gotten to the show doing the true "Governor attacks the prison" scenario that ended the long prison arc in the comic books.

Rune Factory Developer Goes Bust IGN PS3

Neverland, the developer behind the successful Harvest Moon spin-off Rune Factory, has ceased operations this week, as reported by Siliconera.

The Rune Factory games are Japanese RPGs that invite you to fish, farm and socialise as well as make weapons, fight monsters and dive into dungeons. Fans would tell you that it's taken the Harvest Moon concept in more interesting directions than the core series in recent years.

The official website states that it will be ceasing operations immediately, citing changing economic conditions as the main factor in its demise. The developer has been unable to find funding to keep afloat. Bankruptcy proceedings will be started soon.

How Virtual Reality Will Change Gaming IGN PS3

When I was little, I never wanted a jetpack. I still don't. My Lego men had jetpacks, and even five-year-old me could see that if you bent their stubby little legs back, the twin jets of flame coming out the back of the engines would melt their plastic feet. Rubbish. When I was little, I wanted virtual reality, like in Tron. And now it's basically here. It even plays Hawken - which basically makes it a jetpack anyway.

Joyless cynics might argue it's not quite Tron yet. VR is still in its teething stage, still an experiment; a bunch of different companies and entrepreneurs flinging ideas and cash at the same problem from different directions, trying to get us closer to our holodeck future. But why now? Why, after years of resignation to arcades and horrors like the Virtual Boy are these start-ups able to challenge billion-dollar companies for control of gamers' living rooms?

PC is "Far Superior" For Gaming, Says Nvidia IGN All

In an interview with MCV, Nvidia's Matt Wright has posited that there's a third option for a new gaming machine, and that it's the far superior choice: the PC.

In the midst of the PS4 and Xbox One frenzy this month, Nvidia has released some smaller, more living-room friendly PCs for the Christmas period. "We are proposing small form-factor PCs to be a viable alternative to the next-gen consoles," said Wright. "Enthusiast players want the ultimate games system and that is the PC."

The message from the firm is that the choice this year shouldn't just be between PS4 and Xbox One. "The PC platform is far superior to any console when it comes to gaming, plus you get all the extra functionality that a computer brings," he says. "Steam now has more users than Xbox Live... There’s a huge community who love playing their games on PC.”

PS4 and Xbox One in AU: Not Quite Next-Gen IGN PS3

The future of gaming has arrived, and it’s brought the future of entertainment kicking and screaming along with it. The Playstation 4 and Xbox One are now available down under, and these amazing boxes of technological wizardry aren’t content to use their Skynet-levels of sentience merely to play games. They’re supposedly the interactive suns at the centre of our entertainment universe, kicking DVD, Blu-ray and Cable TV boxes to the curb. Even if you’re not addicted to games, both consoles pack enough mainstream entertainment into their small dimensions to forever eliminate boredom. Well, that’s the theory.

It appears that most of the non-gaming features didn’t quite make the lengthy trip from the shores of America and Europe across those large puddles of blue stuff between them and us. Maybe Operation Sovereign Borders mistook these powerful new features for refugees, and sent them packing? As the Xbox One has spent so much more of its US$471 build budget on entertainment features than the Playstation 4, our investigation will begin with Microsoft’s multimedia Trojan horse.

EA Aware of Battlefield 4 DLC Issues on Xbox One IGN All

A number of Xbox One users have had issues downloading the Xbox One-exclusive Battlefield 4: Second Assault DLC, and EA and Microsoft are currently investigating the matter.

It seems that players have been unable to download the DLC - a timed exclusive for the console - after buying the DLC subscription package Battlefield Premium. Many took to Battlelog to voice their complaints, and EA representative 'EA_Rick' subsequently made an official response on the Battlefield social platform.

"I know some of you have said already that it is being looked into but I wanted to just confirm it for you so you guys have a blue post to refer to. Right now all I can say is that we are aware of this issue and are currently investigating this with Microsoft. Once we have some more details I'll be sure to let you know."

Borderlands 2, GRID 2 Free For PlayStation Plus Users IGN All

Good news, North American PlayStation Plus subscribers: Sony has revealed four games that will be free for you to download in December of 2013.

Let’s start out with the biggest of them all: Borderlands 2. Gearbox Software’s smash-hit shooter will be free in December, and that’s good news, because we absolutely loved it.

Other free games will include racer GRID 2 on PlayStation 3 (a great game), as well as two PS Vita titles: Urban Trial Freestyle and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

As usual, these free games will be added to the Instant Game Collection – a free catalog of downloadables – as we move through December. So don’t expect them to all be free at once.

How Sony Wooed Warframe Onto PS4 IGN All

We’ve heard a lot about how Sony has wooed indie developers over the past year. The decision to exhibit indies alongside triple-A titles at the PS4 announcement event became a major talking point back in February. But while the short term benefits of this good PR are obvious to anyone who kept up with PS4 pre-order numbers or the PS4’s US launch, at which it sold over a million units in a day, it’s from the long term benefits that Sony has most to gain.

Enter Digital Extremes. As a developer it’s no spring chicken, having worked on titles ranging from The Darkness 2 to Unreal Tournament way back in 1999, but despite this it’s kept a low profile. Or at least, it did until Sony decided to throw away its old indie rulebook, embrace the studio with open arms and beg to have PC space ninja brawler Warframe ported as a PS4 launch title. In doing so, Sony earned Digital Extremes’ loyalty and admiration, but just how did such a thing come about?

Flu Review IGN All

When the SARS outbreak ravaged Asia in 2007, thousands died across the continent. China, Hong Kong, Singapore – all suffered a high number of casualties. The disease even brought death to the United States and Ireland. But Korea was left, peculiarly, unscathed.

Flu is a biological disaster film that stems partly from that anxiety. Why was it unaffected? Why was it saved? And from that niggling uncertainty, it extrapolates a nightmarish virus that kills its host within days and tears a Korean city apart in weeks. Ultimately, FLU’s a tad too long, which undercuts some of its good work, but thanks to very good performances, some thrifty special effects, and one deeply disturbing scene, Flu is an effective disaster movie that introduces the element of biological panic.

Comic Book Reviews for 11/27/13 IGN All

Welcome to the latest batch of IGN Comics' weekly reviews. Luckily, despite the imminent holiday, we were only short one reviewer this week. And that's good news, because several publishers decided to flood the market with new releases despite it being Thanksgiving week. The better news is that so many of these releases are well worth reading - the game-changing Uncanny Avengers #14, the finale to Geoff Johns' Aquaman run, the debut of Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera's dark sci-fi opus Black Science, and many more. There were a lot of 8's and 9's handed out this week, even from the miserly Jesse. And is it possible that one book landed the elusive 10 rating? You'll have to read on to find out.

Hawkeye #14 Review IGN All

hawkeye 15 Last month's melancholy Hawkeye #13 was a tough act to follow, and writers Matt Fraction and Annie Wu have followed up that sorrowful effort with an uplifting shift in mood as the action switches over to Kate Bishop's summer of self-discovery. It's a stark tonal contrast to where we left Clint Barton, and it's hard not to compare the two narratives. Kate's story is as light and fluffy as Clint's is increasingly dark and grim, but fortunately, we can take comfort in the one constant that never lets us down: the ever present Pizza Dog.

Saga #16 Review IGN All

saga16_cover Starting with Saga #12, the creative team has experimented with a rather unusual mode of storytelling. That issue left off with Prince Robot IV brutally interrogating D. Oswald Heist, the writer with whom Marko and Alana's family have been hiding. Since then, the narrative has taken a few twists and turns as writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Fiona Staples juggled the many moving pieces of their tale. It's an interesting tactic, but its resulted in a story that's struggled with severe pacing problems. In issue #16, we're seemingly all caught up on events, but the sense of urgency built in earlier issues is all but lost.

Pretty Deadly #2 Review IGN All

prettydeadly02-cover Pretty Deadly, by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Emma Rios, is -- inarguably -- one of the most ambitious and visually stunning books to hit shelves this month. Unfortunately, its that very same ambition that tangles up the story, resulting in a book that's as stylistically brilliant as it is narratively befuddling.

The book opens with a standard "Previously seen on..." style recap of the first issue's happenings, but its wildly useless. Several names are tossed out in quick succession, with little context with which to ground them. One wonders why the effort to add it was even deemed necessary, as it only serves to highlight the book's greatest weakness: its convoluted mixture of myth-making and plot.

Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril #5 IGN All

TSTRONG_Cv5_9rgjxuu9og_ We are really starting to feel the length of this series. Just when it seemed like things were picking up steam, Tom Strong and the Planet of Peril moves back into “people standing around and talking” territory. Sure, it's well written and absolutely beautiful, but there is a sense of treading water here, like the story is being dragged out for no good reason. Hopefully, things will get tied up soon because what was once a taunt, masterful story has quickly become a slow moving, talky comic series. This is not the Tom Strong we know and love.

Indestructible Hulk #16 Review IGN All

indestructible hulk 16 This series has lost a lot of steam. What was once of Marvel's best comics has quickly become a mediocre book with a a forever rotating art team. Each month, it fails to gain traction again, fails to recapture that spark and this month is no different. Once again, we have a new artist, a whole new look. We also get a return to previous status quo, but it's hard to remember who these characters are and why we should care. Maybe Mark Waid and company can get Hulk back on track, maybe they can find that rhythm that made the earlier issues so much damn fun. Maybe, just maybe.

Rat Queens #3 Review IGN All

RatQueens_03cover-2 Rat Queens #3 dials back the humor a bit to give us a better look at some of the characters, which is a good thing. You'll miss the humor though, which isn't to say this issue isn't funny, it's just not as funny as the previous two. In a way, the nonstop humor is the heart of this series, so when things slowdown, it's like something is missing. Still, Rat Queens is a freaking rad comic book series and it deserves a place on your pull list. Plus, it's really, really pretty.

Conan and the People of the Black Circle #2 Review IGN All

24075 There's a bit of a sophomore slump going on here, a dip in quality that is almost all because of the book's artwork. Conan and the People of the Black Circle is still well written, if a bit wordy, but the art loses some of its muster an becomes lifeless and repetitive. What looked exciting and new a mere issue ago now looks stiff and boring. If there is one thing a Conan comic should never be, it's boring. Hopefully, this series can recover and find that spark that gave it such a promising start.

You certainly can start here, and there's plenty of great stuff in this issue to enjoy, but the weight of some of the moments really depend on you having read the first Sledgehammer 44 comics. wolverine and the x-men annual 01 It seems a little strange for Marvel to be releasing a new Infinity tie-in on the same day the event wraps up, doesn't it? What this issue really sets out to do is reconnect readers with Kid Gladiator, a Jean Grey School member who has been absent from the series ever since his father dragged him back to Chandrilar.
